Figuring out how to stay warm and look cute has been an age old challenge for women in cold climates – thank goodness for fur coats and slim puffers! Sometimes in order to stay warm, you just have to go for the straight up bulky parka. I’m lucky to be in Northern California, but it still calls for wool from time to time…and layers are a must just in case the sun decides to come out and you get too warm.
Even when I lived in freezing cold NYC, layers were the key to looking cute instead of like the Michelin Man. Instead of one big bulky piece, a few fitted layers keep you just as warm. One of my favorite layering tricks is knee-high socks over sheer tights – super warm, flattering, and school-girl cute. These tights are low rise too, and don’t hurt your stomach with an iron grip control top! Sometimes, I’d even sneak an extra pair of ankle socks (layer number three!) inside my boots. Sweater dresses are fitted and keep the heat in, but show off the curves to avoid the potato-sack look. Of course, you’ll still need coat action over top, but with more thing layers I have found you can get away with a sleeker coat. Unless it’s a polar vortex – then, you just need to wear as many puffy items as possible to stay alive!
I love the color red, and bold geographic patterns (like I wore in this post) and this striped red dress is completely my style. I will always keep a pair of Canada mittens around – I lived in Vancouver during the 2010 winter Olympics where these mitts were born. Not only are the colors perfect but they bring back great memories (Go Canada!). This bag is my new wear-with-everything favorite; I love the structured look.
