Summer’s officially here, and you know what that means in San Francisco – wind and fog. Summer blues indeed, and I’m keeping the blue and white theme alive post July 4th with these striped culottes. I’ve always loved the culotte trend, because they look so airy and comfortable. I paired them with a cute little knit tank ( it’s too cold to actually wear this without a jacket lately!), I found a way to incorporate sweater material into “summer” without looking totally inappropriate, though wool definitely has it’s place this time of year in San Francisco!
What Are Culottes Anyway?
They’re defined as women’s cropped trousers, with very full cut legs to resemble a skirt. These were originally developed for women (after being worn for hundreds of years by men) so that they could ride a horse, without going side-saddle, and still appear as though they were a skirt. It was a big faux pas to wear pants as a women prior to the early 1900’s. Thankfully, times have changed… A LOT! Despite having been functional in another time, I love the classic cut and I think they’re very flattering.
Apparently these are a real thing, and not just because of the San Francisco fog! You may have heard of SAD, or seasonal affective disorder, which often strikes people in the winter due to lack of sunlight. According to the lead SAD researcher, the same thing can happen in the summer. Instead of feeling lethargic, people tend to feel edgy and restless which could be caused by excessive heat or light, that messes with the body’s normal rhythms. How to cure summer SAD? Stay out of the heat and light. Ha – piece of cake in this city in July and Fog-ust! More info here.
